In 1949, Eicher GoodEarth was set up in India with a technical collaboration with Gebr. Eicher of Germany imported and sold about 1500 tractors in India. On 24 April 1959 Eicher came out with the first locally assembled tractor from its Faridabad factory and in a period from 1965 to 1974 became the first fully manufactured (100% indigenization) tractor in India. In December 1987 Eicher Tractors went public and in June 2005 Eicher Motors Limited sold Eicher Tractors &amp; Engines to a subsidiary of TAFE called TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited.

Farmtrac tractors are built in India by the Escorts Group (Escorts Agri) for sale in India and Poland. It is one of three brands built by Escorts Agri. The other brands are Escort and Powertrac. Deutz-Fahr is a brand of tractors and other farm equipment. It was established in 1968 after the acquisition of the majority of share capital in FAHR, a leading company already producing agricultural equipment in the previous century, by the Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD) group.

In 1995 Deutz-Fahr joined the Italian Group SAME/Lamborghini/H&uuml;rlimann to become the SAME Deutz-Fahr Group, now the SDF Group. In 1996, SAME DEUTZ-FAHR set up production in a joint venture with Greaves Ltd in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu. It was known as SAME GREAVES TRACTOR Ltd and manufactured tractors under the name SAME-Greaves for sale in India. SAME DEUTZ-FAHR (SDF) India Private Limited a subsidiary of SDF Group Italy since 2002. The Group manufactures and sells tractors across the globe through its major brands SAME, Deutz-Fahr, Lamborghini, Hurlimann, and Gregoire. SDF India sells its tractors in India through its brand Deutz-Fahr and the product range includes tractors from 35-80HP. SDF India has an established network of 220+ dealerships with service centers across India. Action Construction Equipment Limited (ACE) began manufacturing Tractors in 2009 by launching two models in 35 / 45 HP categories. At present, it is manufacturing 3 models by introducing 55 HP models in 2011. And also manufactured cranes, harvester, etc. In Oct.2013 ACE Tractors reached a milestone of selling 2000 tractors in India and Nepal. ACE has its manufacturing plants in Faridabad (Haryana), Kashipur/Bajpur (Uttrakhand).

Captain Tractors had been established in 1994 in Rajkot by joint efforts of two brothers Mr. G.T. Patel and Mr. M.T. Patel based from village Sanali dist. Amreli (Gujarat). Standard Combine began building tractors in Barnala, Punjab, India. In Standard Tractors, tractors are being manufactured in the range of 35, 45, 50, 60, and 75 HP with respective model names: Standard 335, Standard 345, Standard 450, Standard 460, and Standard 475. Engines for all these tractor models, except the last one, are manufactured within the plant as &lsquo;Standard Engines&rsquo;, in specific names &ndash; SE 335, SE 345, SE 450, and SE 460, respectively.

All the above-mentioned models of Standard Engines have shown compliance to the TREM-III emission norms, as have been verified by the ARAI. However, two new variants of the tractor of 35 hp (Standard 335-I) and 45 hp (Standard 345-I), equipped with famous Perkins engines (assembled within the Standard Tractors plant), and two completely new models of the tractor of 30 hp (Standard 330) and 40 hp (Standard 340) are on the verge to be launched.

The Eicher 551 is being offered in India in a single variant, which can be had in one of the two colour options of blue and silver. While the tractor is available with mechanical steering for Rs 6.80 lakh, it can also be had with a power steering option for Rs 7.10 lakh

Available in a single variant, which can be had either with mechanical steering or power steering, the prices of the Eicher 551 start at Rs 6.80 lakh.

The Eicher 551 gets its power from a 3300cc three-cylinder diesel engine, which features water-cooling and produces a maximum power output of 49 hp. The powertrain also comes with a dry-type air filter and a single clutch mechanism, though the tractor can be configured with a dual-clutch mechanism if required. The transmission on duty in the Eicher 551 consists of eight forward and two reverse gears. The top speed of the Eicher 551 is 32.93 kmph.

Paired to a transmission unit which has eight forward and two reverse gears, the 3300cc diesel engine of the Eicher 551 has a peak power output of 49 hp. 

Measuring 3660mm long, 1775mm wide and 2260mm tall, the Eicher 551 has a wheelbase of 1980mm and a total weight of 2190 kg. The Eicher 551 has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres and rides on 6.0x16 front and 14.9x28 rear tyres. However, one can configure the Eicher 551 with 7.50x16 front and 14.9x28 rear tyres on a special request. The lifting capacity of Eicher 551 is 2100 kg.

The Eicher 551 has a lifting capacity of 2100 kg while measuring 3660mm long and weighing over 2 tonnes. 

The Eicher 551 is one of those tractors which comes equipped with a live, six-splined shaft PTO as standard, which here operates at 540 rpm. The Eicher 551 also comes equipped with a three-point linkage and controls for draft, position and response links with CAT-2. While the tractor comes with oil immersed brakes, it also has a few optional features like an auxiliary pump with spool valve and a company-fitted drawbar and top link. While the tractor features mechanical steering as standard, buyers can also opt for power steering by paying some amount extra.
